May

The species to look out for in May: common nightingale.

Another good month to observe bird migration

Migratory birds arrive from the south to breed here or pass through en route to their breeding grounds farther north. Under the right weather conditions, you can observe the migration of passing birds, such as barn swallows.

There’s a lot of activity on the breeding islands. This is also the perfect time for bird song, culminating in the hidden nightingales in the dunes.

The storks

The white storks are in nursery mode, with plenty of young chicks to feed.

Common tree frogs are easy to spot and can also be heard at night. Insect life increases in leaps and bounds while plants add colour to the Zwin. Dark pink red campion carpets the Zwin Nature Park.
