During spring break, love is in the air at the Zwin. Birds are preparing for the breeding season, building nests and seeking out mates. Join our guides to discover how nature and Valentine's Day go hand in hand.
Guides will teach you more about feeding birds, nesting boxes and life on the breeding islands. Discover the details you can find in pellets in the lab hut, or admire diatoms in the observation centre.
For children, there is an extra experience with a duck memory game and a heart-warming story.
Those who like to explore the park together can discover the new quest “Hundred holes and houses”, in which children search for the homes and nesting places of animals in the park.

Diatoms
Diatoms are single-celled algae that occur in both fresh and salt water. In the Zwin, they are found in great numbers — the brown layer you often see on the mudflats consists of billions of diatoms.
The importance of diatoms is immense: they form the basis of many food chains, produce vast amounts of oxygen, and are also used by humans in various ways.
Our Zwin guides make diatoms visible under a microscope and provide expert explanations about these fascinating organisms.
